Songs for Silenced Voices

Songs for Silenced Voices: a 20-minute tragic opera

This professional opera has grown our of research with Liverpool’s homeless community and was created in response to demands to make work that would challenge peoples’ prejudices about homeless people.  It began life as a 10-minute piece performed in a disused shop in Liverpool’s St John’s Centre at Christmas 2009, and was further developed into a 20-minute piece the following year when it was performed in empty shops in both Liverpool and Blackburn.  This timeless, epic piece charts the dying moments of an ex-soldier who, unable to readjust to civilian life, seeks comfort in the arms of a street woman.
