Delivering Arts Activities in Homeless Settings

This full-day seminar will explore different approaches to designing and delivering first class participatory arts and cultural activities for homeless people.

By the end of the seminar, participants will:

  • Understand the potential and role of the arts in homeless settings and with homeless participants.
  • Understand how to build effective group dynamics when working in homeless settings.
  • Have strategies for managing relationships with homeless provider partners and promote the use of creativity within their services.
  • Have a toolkit of practical exercises and activities that work well with homeless people.
  • Have confidence to deal with the unexpected when delivering arts based activities.

Target Audience

This course is aimed at artists, theatre facilitators, activities coordinators and voluntary sector service providers. It’s for anyone looking to find new ways of working with vulnerable adults, and those with some experience who are looking for practical tips and a refreshed approach.

Approach

This full-day course is an informal seminar with plenty of opportunity for questions, discussion and learning from fellow-participants’ experiences.

Trainer

Sarah Thornton is founding Artistic Director of Collective Encounters.  She established the company to make exciting, collaborative theatre and explore its potential to contribute to social change.  Her work with the company has drawn on her varied background which over the past 20 years has included applied work in diverse community contexts, developing and directing fringe and professional theatre, university lecturing and practice-as-research.
