SUMMARY:Making Theatre from Lived Experience - MASTERCLASS
DESCRIPTION:A masterclass workshop exploring both practical and ethical approaches to making theatre from lived experience in community settings. \n\nMuch of participatory theatre aims to tell the stories of communities who have been marginalised and amplify hidden stories that aren’t given space in the mainstream media. The term “theatre from lived experience” has become common in the participatory theatre lexicon to describe an approach to making theatre with communities which deals with the real issues in their lives. \nIn this event we will explore creative exercises which support the process of making theatre from lived experience; and the ethics of this practice. Attendees will be introduced to approaches used by the Collective Encounters team in our participatory projects. \nThis training will be delivered by Co-Artistic Directors Michelle Richards and Marianne Matusz. \nOnline Event: This training will take place online using Zoom. You will receive an email with the link. \n**Please note: we do not record the sessions because of the sensitive nature of the topic. \nLength: 3 hours \nTicket Cost: \n\nFor attendees supported by their organisations the full price of a ticket is £40.00\nFor freelancers and individuals from non-regularly funded organisations attendees the price of a ticket is £30.00\nFor those on low or no income the ticket price is £18.00\n\nWe also have a small number of bursary places available for those with limited funds\, please email info@collective-encounters.org.uk \n* *Please Note: Ticket sales will end 24 hours before this event is due to start. \nAccess: This event will use live transcription. SUMMARY:Making Theatre from Lived Experience - Masterclass
DESCRIPTION:About this event: \nMuch of participatory theatre aims to tell the stories of communities who have been marginalised and amplify hidden stories that aren’t given space in the mainstream media. \nThe term “theatre from lived experience” has become common in the participatory theatre lexicon to describe an approach to making theatre with communities which deals with the real issues in their lives. \nIn this event we will explore creative exercises which support the process of making theatre from lived experience; and the ethics of this practice. Attendees will be introduced to approaches used by the Collective Encounters team in our participatory projects. \nThis training will be delivered by Michelle Richards (Associate Artist) and Marianne Matusz (Co-Artistic Director). It’s built my confidence and self-esteem\, and it’s really ignited the fire in my belly to go on and do more with my life. I will be forever grateful for this course. \nPersonally I’ve had lots of struggles doing this\, because I’m a total technophobe\, but I’ve kept going\, I’ve learned so much\, and I know as well where I’ve got to go on to learn more. My go to thing is to think: I can’t do this. But I’ve had a go\, and I’ve so enjoyed it. It’s made me face my fears and do it anyway. \nI feel so lucky and privileged to have spent this time with these amazing women being very vulnerable and honest and getting to discuss and play with our experiences.

SUMMARY:Digital Participatory Theatre: Devising
DESCRIPTION:Following on from the first series of ‘Open Playground’ events\, we are excited to host four new events providing an online space in which participatory theatre makers and facilitators can connect with their peers and try out new ideas. \nIn response to practitioners who attended the first ‘Open Playground’ events\, each new playground will focus on a different form of participatory theatre with an emphasis on exploring the possibilities of delivering these forms online (full details below): \nPlayback Theatre (22nd October) \nLiving Newspaper (29th October) \nForum Theatre (5th November) \nDevising (12th November) \nEach ‘Open Playground’ will be facilitated by a member of the Collective Encounters’ team\, with contributions from a guest practitioner. These sessions will go beyond workshop games to explore how practitioners are delivering the fundamentals of these forms online. \nThese ‘Open Playground’ events are not training events but facilitated forums in which new and emerging practice can be tested and shared. \nFor background information on some of the challenges and unexpected benefits of delivering participatory theatre online please read: Delivering Participatory Theatre During Social Distancing: What’s Working? \nThese ‘Open Playground’ events form part of Collective Encounters Centre for Excellence in Participatory Theatre sector support programme during COVID-19. \n12 November: Devising with Abi Horsfield \nDevised Theatre is a method of theatre-making in which the script and/or performance is developed collectively. Often beginning with games\, improvisation tasks and playing with ideas\, themes and other stimuli\, devising is collaborative and experimental. Through the devising process\, collaborators can get to the heart of the stories they wish to tell and experiment with ways of telling them. A great way of everyone’s voice getting heard\, devised theatre can often present multiple and differing perspectives on an issue in a single performance. \nAbi Horsfield is a community theatre/arts professional with over 25 years’ experience of theatre facilitation\, performance and project management. Her long career has seen her deliver workshops across 300 projects in 27 challenging countries such as Ghana\, Thailand\, Uzbekistan\, the Philippines and Nigeria. As part of her work for Collective Encounters\, during lockdown Abi has been delivering an Open Award in Devising with adults online.

SUMMARY:Digital Participatory Theatre: Forum Theatre
\n5 November: Forum Theatre with Katy Rubin \nForum Theatre is a participatory theatre technique created by Augusto Boal\, under the umbrella of Theatre of the Oppressed. In Forum Theatre actors present an original play ‘chronicling an unresolved problem resulting from systemic oppression’. Facilitated by a ‘Joker’\, a series of interactive interventions follow the Forum performance. The audience directly influence and change what is happening onstage and so are active participants in finding solutions to the problems presented. The aim of Forum Theatre is to empower audiences\, now ‘spec-actors’\, with tools to fight and address the challenges they face. \nKaty Rubin is founder and former Executive Director for Theatre of the Oppressed New York\, “a nonprofit organization that partners with communities facing discrimination to spark transformative action”. Katy trained with Augusto Boal in Brazil and has facilitated Theatre of the Oppressed projects with activists and artists internationally and across the US over the past decade. \nYou will be sent a link to the zoom session after registering online.
