SUMMARY:TRAINING: Tech for Sound
DESCRIPTION:Are you a theatre maker who wants to use sound more but doesn’t know where to start? \n Sound is a fantastic tool to support storytelling. Find out about the way sound can create spaces of its own and establish depth\, context and atmosphere. \n_ _ _ \nThis training will enable participatory theatre makers to take a more in-depth look at the nuts and bolts of recording\, working with and editing sound. \nIt will provide an introduction to software including Echoes (geolocated audio tours) and Shure Motive (mobile recording app)\, illustrated through a case study of how they have been used in a recent participatory music project delivered by Yorkshire Sound Women Network. \nThere will be time in the training for you to explore these apps hands-on\, followed by an introduction to using Audacity (free sound editing software). You will need access to a smartphone / computer or laptop for this training and instructions will be given on how to download all apps and software which will be covered in the training prior to the event. \n_ _ _ \nTrainers: \nCaro C (Freelance Facilitator and Musician) and Heidi Johnson (Development Manager\, YSWN) \nCaro C is a passionate artist\, engineer and facilitator in sound (music and words). Caro also produces music and sound design for film\, theatre and dance. This “one-woman electronic avalanche” (BBC Introducing) only started making music in 1997 thanks to being laid up with back trouble. Caro worked with Collective Encounters in 2019 with Aidan Jolly/Threepenny Festival when all spent a day hosting a group of Colombian and Chilean environmental activists. \nHeidi is Development Manager for Yorkshire Sound Women Network. She has 17 years’ experience working in the music education and arts sectors\, with a particular interest in promoting musical inclusion through digital technologies. \nYorkshire Sound Women Network (YSWN) was founded in 2015 by women working in the sound technology industry who wanted to use their skills and influence to address gender and racial inequality. \n_ _ _ \nTicket Cost: \n\nFor participants who are supported by their organisation the full price of a ticket is £27.50\n\n\nFor freelancers and individual attendees the ticket cost is £22.50\n\n\nA discount rate for those on low or no income is available for £17.50 \n\nWe also have a small number of bursary places available for those with limited funds\, please email Marianne at marianne@collective-encounters.org.uk \n**NEW – We have now introduced a ‘Pay it Forward’ price which is the cost of one ticket plus a donation to our Bursary Fund\, this is £32.50 \n_ _ _ \nLocation: Online\, via Zoom \nAccess: This event will use live transcription. It’s built my confidence and self-esteem\, and it’s really ignited the fire in my belly to go on and do more with my life. I will be forever grateful for this course. \nPersonally I’ve had lots of struggles doing this\, because I’m a total technophobe\, but I’ve kept going\, I’ve learned so much\, and I know as well where I’ve got to go on to learn more. My go to thing is to think: I can’t do this. But I’ve had a go\, and I’ve so enjoyed it. It’s made me face my fears and do it anyway. \nI feel so lucky and privileged to have spent this time with these amazing women being very vulnerable and honest and getting to discuss and play with our experiences.

Often beginning with games\, improvisation tasks and playing with ideas\, themes and other stimuli\, devising is collaborative and experimental. Through the devising process\, collaborators can get to the heart of the stories they wish to tell and experiment with ways of telling them. A great way of everyone’s voice getting heard\, devised theatre can often present multiple and differing perspectives on an issue in a single performance. \nAbi Horsfield is a community theatre/arts professional with over 25 years’ experience of theatre facilitation\, performance and project management. Her long career has seen her deliver workshops across 300 projects in 27 challenging countries such as Ghana\, Thailand\, Uzbekistan\, the Philippines and Nigeria. As part of her work for Collective Encounters\, during lockdown Abi has been delivering an Open Award in Devising with adults online.

Founded in 1975 by Jonathon Fox and Jo Sallas\, Playback theatre is facilitated by a ‘conductor’\, who acts as a conduit between the audience and a team of actors and a musician. Playback theatre is now used across the world in educational\, community and therapeutic settings\, to bring individuals together to share\, connect and investigate issues of society\, politics and justice. \nDr Aylwyn Walsh is an associate professor in Applied Theatre at the School of Performance and Cultural Industries\, University of Leeds. Specialising in performance and social change\, in recent years Dr Walsh has focused on practice in women’s prisons\, mental health contexts and its implications for activism. Over 2019/20 Dr Walsh led international projects with young people in South Africa as part of Changing the Story “to establish a sense of place beyond systemic identification of place with gangs\, drugs and violence”. \nYou will be sent a link to the zoom session after registering online.
