We’re proud to share a new blog from Aidan Jolly, Collective Encounters’ Co-Artistic Director (Research) with contributions from participants Gary See and Karen Livesey, written in response to a recent roundtable hosted by Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and the Campaign for Science and Engineering.

In “Regional Innovation: Who for? In what?”, Aidan reflects on the need for more equitable, community-led approaches to research and innovation across the Liverpool City Region. As the sole community-sector voice on the panel, he offers a valuable provocation: what if communities initiated research, set the questions, and shaped the methods, with institutions offering support, rather than direction?

Drawing on his experience through the ReCITE project, Aidan raises powerful questions around trust, ethics and the value of lived experience in shaping our collective future. He explores the role of creative methodologies in research, the imbalance of resources between institutions and communities, and the importance of valuing knowledge in all its forms.
