About Us

Established in 2004, Collective Encounters is a professional arts organisation specialising in using theatre as a tool for social change through collaborative practice. Collective Encounters works with people on the margins of society, telling untold stories and tackling pressing social and political concerns. We work within the Liverpool City Region with those who have been directly affected by poverty and inequality. Professional artists lead our activities, working in partnership with a number of individuals and agencies from a diverse range of sectors.

In 2019 Collective Encounters established a Centre for Excellence in Participatory Theatre.  This arm of the company delivers training, networking and advocacy activity on behalf of and with the (inter) national participatory theatre movement. The Centre for Excellence in Participatory Theatre  is a critical and unique resource for the participatory theatre movement with monthly events happening online attracting more than 1000 people annually.

We are funded by Arts Council England (via their National Portfolio programme), Big Lottery Reaching Communities, Liverpool City Council and has generous support from major trusts and foundations.
